Real Time and Space (RTS) is comprised of 17 work-only artist studios and an artist residency program located in a former print shop in Oakland’s Chinatown. RTS aims to provide a productive and participatory workspace for our members and residents by fostering opportunities for dialogue, collaboration, and cross-disciplinary interaction. Our members include artists, writers, curators, and designers. RTS seeks to facilitate the exchange of ideas within and beyond the Bay Area artistic community through our residency program.
This open call is for our 2024-2025 residency program.There are 2 residency tracks.
Track 1: 3 local artists(resides in the Bay Area of California) will be awarded a 3-month period residency with a $2000 stipend.
Track 2: 3 out of town artists(non Bay Area person) will be awarded a 1 month residency, a $1000 stipend, and a $2000 travel stipend.
"Non Bay Area person" defined: Resides in other parts of California outside of the Bay Area, Resides in another state in the United Stated. Resides in another country.
Bay Area consists of San Jose, San Francisco and Oakland along with smaller urban and rural areas. The Bay Area's nine counties are Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma.
Note you can only apply to one track, NOT both tracks.
The residency studio at RTS is 170 sq. ft and includes access to a communal wood shop. RTS is centrally located near BART and downtown Oakland.
Requirements for the residency:
- Work on-site at the studio for a minimum of 15 hrs a week
- Give 1-2 artist talks during the residency period
- Create an artwork in the form of a multiple (edition of 10) for the RTS Residency archive
- A studio visit(s) with RTS members while in residence
Note: No hazardous or toxic materials may be used in the studio space.
No kiln on site
